Physics
HERO Class Syllabus for 2011-2012

Course Description
This is a college preparatory course in the fundamental science of physics. Physics is explores how everything in the universe works. Scientific Laws dealing with motion, energy, gravity, optics, electricity and magnetism will be explored in depth through reading, problem solving, and experimentation. Students should be very comfortable with Algebra and the basic trigonometric functions: sine, cosine, and tangent. This course is brisk and rigorous. Successful students must devote 45 min to one hour of every weekday to study and must keep up with reading and assignments. Explanations for key problems will be posted on my blog for further study and reinforcement.

Course Instructor
Karen Betts Mielke, MD, JD

Course Text
Exploring Creation with Physics, 2nd ed., Dr. Jay Wile

Supplies
Lab notebook (bound composition notebook)
Notebook for note taking and problem solving (bound composition book strongly recommended)
Scientific Calculator
Pen or pencil

Grading Information
Biweekly module tests will generally be administered at home and graded by the instructor. Students must show their work for all problems. Homework assignments are absolutely necessary and must be completed on time. Students will be asked to show that they have done the homework by turning in answers only at the beginning of class.  Because learning is not complete unless one can pass on knowledge through teaching, topics will be assigned regularly for the students to present to their peers.  Grading will consist of homework completion, class participation, lab write up, presentation, and module test scores.
